3 min

For every woman, the experience of giving birth to a child is unique. And, in fact, the experience can also vary from one pregnancy to another for the same woman. While there is no fixed way to determine how the labor and delivery are going to shape up for you, it is pretty natural to be both curious and apprehensive about the same. Of course, the possible pain associated with it might even invoke a small amount of fear in you. Also, while you are scared about yourself, even the thought of your infant and his/her well-being constantly crosses your mind. So, have you wondered how your little one will move inside you before finally making his/her grand entry in the world? We are sure that you have. Don’t you worry, we are here to let you know about your precious one’s journey to our big, grand world. Of course, with a little help though. A renowned medical illustrator, Peg Gerrity, has designed a few illustrations to show how an infant passes through the mother’s birth canal in case of a natural vaginal delivery.

1. Now Is The Time To Go Out

The babies first comfortably position themselves in such a way that they are all set to head out. They may stretch, tumble, and twist during pregnancy. But, right before labor, they usually position themselves such that they can be delivered headfirst. While this may not always happen, your doctor will be aware of that and will take the necessary precautions. So, don’t let that worry you. With the baby settling into the right position, the soon-to-be mom’s cervix will soon begin to dilate.

You may already be aware that the amniotic fluid sac is holding your little one safe inside your belly. This sac, which is also known as the bag of waters, makes some space for the growth and development of your infant. It also maintains a steady temperature for the baby and also prevents the umbilical cord from getting squeezed. And, as the cervix begins to dilate, this membrane gets ruptured, making space for the baby to comfortably pass through the birth canal.

3. Crowning Time

We are sure that you know that the process involves a lot of pushing. After all, even a slight mention of labor in movies and TV shows bring in a scene with the doctor urging the expecting mom to push with all her might. After several hours of this crucial pushing exercise, the infant’s head starts to crown.

And, as the doctor hands you over the little one to hold in your arms, you realize how all the efforts are worth it. After all, nothing can be more beautiful and precious than this tiny human being that you have just brought into this world.
